Can family members apply for the same IPO separately?
Yes. Each adult can apply for the same IPO on their own, as long as each application uses that person's own PAN, demat account and bank account.
One application per PAN, per category
An investor may submit one application per category using their PAN. Several applications from the same PAN in the same category are treated as duplicates and rejected. This is checked by PAN, so using another account's demat or a different name does not change that.
Why a family has several chances
Retail allotment is a lottery when the IPO is oversubscribed, and the draw is per application. Several adults each applying with their own PAN are separate applications with separate chances. No individual's chance is improved by the others.
Do it with each person's own accounts
Each person should apply from their own demat account and their own bank account's UPI ID, with their knowledge and consent. Applying through someone else's accounts without their permission is not something to do. Rules for minors and joint accounts have extra conditions, so check with your broker.
Keeping track is the hard part
With several people, several brokers and several banks, it becomes hard to remember who applied, how much money is blocked where, and who was allotted. The registrar's allotment page also has to be checked separately for each PAN.
IPO Khata is built for exactly this. Add each family member once, record who applied to which IPO, and it checks every person's allotment at the registrar and emails you the results. It never applies for you.
